It is the GOLD STANDARD for evaluation of wrist pain.
The use of hand and wrist arthroscopy is one service provided by the Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery that pushes the frontiers of keyhole surgery. The development of minimally invasive surgery negates the need for open exploration, which often results in large debilitating wound producing prolonged morbidity.
Wrist arthroscopy is the result of careful study and miniaturization of the already minimal invasive approach to the body. It has become a very safe modality as both an investigative and therapeutic tool. Since its introduction in 1979 by Chen, the technique is now well established.
Other indications include:
- Unexplained wrist pain particularly ulnar sided wrist pain, despite more than 3 months of conservative management;
- Diagnosis of soft tissue and chondral injuries that are not apparent in conventional radiological investigations
- Treatment of complex triangular fibrocartilaginous tears
- Treatment of interosseous ligament injuries in carpal instabilities
- Debridement of loose bodies, chondral lesions, and synovitis;
- Reduction and fixation of intraarticular fractures of the distal radius, carpal fractures.
- Treatment of ganglions.
- Treatment of ulnar impaction syndrome.
The aim of this service is to provide a ready avenue for the clinician to enhance their diagnostic capability in an otherwise unknown wrist pain. Following the procedure, findings will be reported and clinicians will continue to manage their patient as they see fit. The wrist team will also be ready at all times to assist in the management process.
It is hoped that with the introduction of this service, the quality of patient care will be enhanced and the once dreaded “backache ” of the upper extremity will be a well defined entity.
