National University Hospital Mr Michael Leow is in charge of the department’s Prosthetic Hand Clinic. He is one of the pioneer members of the department, having joined the Hand Team under Professor Pho’s leadership in 1987. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the National University of Singapore in 1987 and went on to complete a Master of Science degree in 1995. He completed further specialized training in prosthetics at Northwestern University Medical School Prosthetic-Orthotic Center in Chicago in 1996. His passion lies in biomaterials for prosthetic applications, custom moulding and colour-matching techniques and the clinical and aesthetic aspects of producing and fitting silicone hand and finger prostheses. Despite the conflicting demands of clinical service and research work, he has managed to find time to undertake some research at his own pace and has managed to publish numerous papers in top international prosthetics and hand surgery journals, in addition to a book chapter. A former member of the US Atlanta-based Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI), he also assists doctors to produce medical illustrations for publications in journals and presentations at conferences.
